Experience in Complex Property Division
Dividing the marital estate is always contentious, and more so when there are legitimate disputes about the value of large assets and whether they are separately owned or subject to distribution.
The Dohner Law Office has substantial experience in all facets of high-asset divorce, from business valuations and dividing retirement portfolios to tax planning and asset protection strategies. Serving Akron, Summit County and northeastern Ohio, our lawyer has represented professionals, executives, business owners and other high net worth individuals.

The presumption under Ohio law is an equal contribution to the amassing of wealth, and thus assets accumulating during marriage may be subject to equal distribution in divorce. The exceptions are separate property owned prior to marriage or assets for the specific benefit of one spouse, such as a gift or inheritance.
Mr. Dohner is familiar with the common sticking points in high-asset divorce:
- Valuation of a closely held business
- Value of a professional practice or professional license
- Spousal support (alimony)
- Qualified domestic relations orders (QDRO) to divide pensions, 401(k), IRAs and other retirement funds
- Rental properties, stocks and other investments
- Second homes, antiques, art and high-value personal possessions
- Hidden assets or transfers to family members
- Prenuptial agreements
We hire property appraisers, forensic accountants and other expert witnesses as necessary to identify jointly held assets and determine accurate values. Mr. Dohner is adept at negotiating trade-offs in high-asset divorces, particularly compensation in lieu of selling a business or liquidating its assets.
John M. Dohner is certified by the Ohio Bar as a Family Relations Specialist. He is also a Certified Family Law Arbitrator. Arrange a consultation today, including after hours or weekends by appointment.
